Photography Studies Center of Tomar (CEFT)

Municipality of Tomar

The “Centro de Estudos em Fotografia de Tomar” (Photography Studies Centre of Tomar or CEFT), also known as “Casa dos Cubos” (House of Cubes), is a cultural space dedicated to the promotion of historical and contemporary photography. CEFT is an important meeting point for dialogue and collaboration between artists, photographers, students, teachers and the general public. The architecture of the building is also an attraction, and it is made up of cubic forms that intertwine and create different planes. This is a tribute to the original function of the building, in which cubic boxes were used to count and weigh agricultural products (bushels) as this had the function of a warehouse.

Camera

Photography, as a technique and record of memory, was presented by the Tomar Centre for Photography Studies to the community of Mosteiro, in Pedrógão Grande. The community was invited to share their joys, sorrows, dreams, projects and colours through photographs from family albums and portraits made by the CEFT team.

Museum-Village Route map

The Museum in the Village Project has transcended geographical boundaries by bringing together museums and villages from 26 different municipalities in Portugal. The map highlights the three participating regions and reveals the route between the museum and the village, where Cultural Heritage acts as a bridge to bring together municipalities, celebrate traditions and enhance territorial cohesion.

A laboratory was organised in the association (…) to develop the photos we had taken in the street, using the sun as a resource. Those photos brought back good memories for me. They reminded me of when I was 11 years old; I was at my godfather’s house (…) he was a photo-lab amateur. And I remember that one day I also went into that small laboratory that he had in a corner of his house, where he would develop photographs, one of which he took of me.

(…) it was a way for them to get out of their daily routine and experience an opportunity to value the role of museums as institutions that bring people closer to their roots (…)

It was good, it was great. I think it was useful that they came here, because people are more connected. There are so few of us and there are days when we don’t even see each other, so it’s a way to get together and socialise more with each other. It was nice to have people like you from outside talking to us. The result of this work was beautiful. There was a bit of everything… even a picture of my patio. The experience could not have been better.
