Casa do Tempo Museum goes to Fanhais
From the exhibition of some objects linked to the textile industry of Castanheira de Pera, Museu Casa do Tempo shared some stories and experiences with the community of Fanhais through the testimony of a professional in the wool industry. Additionally, it presented old photographs of the factories of Castanheira de Pera. This centre, which was considered the third largest centre of the wool industry in Portugal, is said to have had nearly 40 factories in operation. However, from the 1980s onwards, most of these factories were decommissioned, leaving only two in operation. Curiously, one of these companies is the only factory in Portugal that produces the hats used by the fishermen and resin tappers of Nazaré.

Casa do Tempo Museum
Municipality of Castanheira de Pera
Inaugurated in 2001, the Casa do Tempo Museum in Castanheira de Pera is a cultural space that contributes to the preservation of local history. The building is designed to depict the dynamics of time in the present, past and future. In its rooms, the importance of the wool industry in the region is presented, as well as equipment related to the printing industry. This museum also hosts several temporary exhibitions dedicated to different artistic languages and handicrafts by both national and international artists. The Museu Casa do Tempo is, therefore, an important cultural reference that contributes to Castanheira de Pera’s tourism.
The artwork that visited the Museum
Fanhais goes to Casa do Tempo Museum
In the village of Fanhais, the project participants immediately recognised the objects brought by the Casa do Tempo Museum. The barrete was very popular among fishermen and peasants in Nazaré at the height of the resin industry. Drawing on these connections, the community of this village shared their pine trees and paid homage not only to the source of their inspiration, but also to local history, the region’s pine forest, and the people who worked in it: the resin workers.
Meetings and Sharing
The Community welcomes an artwork from the Museum, inviting it into the heart of their village. This object becomes a catalyst, inspiring museum professionals and the artistic team to engage participants in a collaborative process. Together, they establish connections between the museum artwork, its reflection, and its ties to local heritage. Using local elements such as objects, songs, stories, and traditions, participants craft their own artwork. The celebration reaches its peak with the inauguration of a temporary exhibition in the museum. An artistic performance fosters connections among communities and museum professionals, strengthening bonds between them.
And so it was… Art as an invitation for encounters and connections.
