Damião de Góis Museum goes to Pena e Casal da Pena

Olive trees, mills, stories, convictions and light were the starting point for sharing between two municipalities. In Alenquer, the Cult of the Divine Holy Spirit inspires and unites the community through a message of hope and faith, which fills the streets of the city with light.

The first testimonies of religious celebrations of the Divine Holy Spirit date back to the 14th century. This preaching got into the spirituality of the people over the years and was initially rejected by the authorities of the Church and by those in charge of the Franciscan Order. After several interruptions, Alenquer resumed these secular festivities in honour of the Holy Spirit in 2007. As a cult, it carries within itself a message of hope and faith for the most disadvantaged people, becoming transversal and adapting to local dynamics. Pena and Casal da Pena are also communities with their own memories and identity, where the essence of the cult of the Holy Spirit’s Empire takes place.

Crown of the Divine Holy Spirit

20th century The crown, the sceptre and the orb are the most important symbols of the cult of the Divine Holy Spirit’s Empire.

Flag, poles and ribbons

20th century
In the centre of the flag, a white dove is embroidered in relief, from which rays of light in white and silver thread radiate. The poles and ribbons are used in ceremonies and processions.

Damião de Góis and Inquisition Victims Museum

Municipality of Alenquer

The Damião de Góis and Inquisition Victims Museum, in Alenquer, pays tribute to the human condition through the Portuguese humanist Damião de Góis, who faced political and religious oppression in the 16th century. Opened in 2017, this museum is set up in the former Church of Santa Maria da Várzea, close to the walls of the Alenquer Castle and the former Jewish Quarter. The space promotes local history and reveals the dark past of the Inquisition in Portugal, prompting reflection on the value of religious and political freedom.

The artwork that visited the Museums

Pena e Casal da Pena go to Museu Municipal Carlos Reis and to Museu Damião de Góis

On a cold night, the project participants, as well as representatives from museums and each municipality, gathered to create art with the Light Painting technique. The photographs were captured by a professional photographer and a community member, reflecting the complementary way in which both interact with light using their senses: one through vision and the other through perception and listening.

Testimonials

The photo was taken at Senhor da Serra (…) it was so cold. I mean, really, really cold. I was happy and I enjoyed it. I had never done anything like that before. It came out great. I told my son how that happened.

It was a joy to socialise! We have to be there for each other and we have to connect with each other. Because a person alone is nothing and nobody.

It is always a joy, a fun to have them here in the village. This has been very good for us, something we didn’t have before. This place is getting a bit forgotten. We love to come and see and hear, it’s what we enjoy and we love these things. I love working together with people.
