VILLAGE ARTWORK

Fanhais visits the Casa do Tempo Museum

In the village of Fanhais, the project participants immediately recognised the objects brought by the Museu Casa do Tempo. The barrete was very popular among fishermen and peasants in Nazaré at the height of the resin industry. Drawing on these connections, the community of this village shared their pine trees and paid homage not only to the source of their inspiration, but also to local history, the region’s pine forest, and the people who worked in it: the resin workers.

The work ‘Resineiros de Fanhais’ (The Resin Tappers of Fanhais) was created from a set of photographs that depict workers in the process of resin extraction in Nazaré. As its starting point, the creative process took several photographs, a hat and some representative objects of the wool industry in Castanheira de Pera. On the initiative of the participants, the work created is a tribute not only to the history of the region and the pine forest itself, but also to the people who have worked there most of their lives. ‘Resineiros de Fanhais’ displays photographic images donated and worked on by the participants, using embroidery, pine bark, pine needles and pinecones, through which they artistically transformed their memories into a colourful work.

Fanhais

Parish Council of Nazaré, Municipality of Nazaré

According to a local legend, Fanhais received its name after the passage of a king through the village, during which his horse got a hoof stuck while walking. ‘You fail!’ (‘falhais’ in Portuguese), exclaimed the monarch, giving rise to an expression that has undergone linguistic changes over time. Historically, this place was one of the first to receive public telephones in Portugal. Located in a forest area – still within Pinhal do Rei – the inhabitants of this village worked in resin tapping for many years. In fact, it is very common for most families in this village to have at least one former resin tapper.

The artwork that visited the Village

Museu Casa do Tempo goes to Fanhais

The Casa do Tempo Museum presented the importance of the old woollen industry in the development of the municipality of Castanheira de Pera. Through photographs of the factories and objects related to the textile industry, the collection tells the stories of the people who wove the local heritage of this region, which was the largest woollen producer in Portugal.

Testimonials

Excellent people who brought us together in times when things weren’t quite right… lots of headaches in the beginning.

Helena Machado, Community of Fanhais, Municipality of Nazaré

If, a few months ago, we looked at the photographs and fabrics in our permanent exhibition only as a way of remembering/knowing the history of Castanheira de Pera, now these photographs and fabrics make us think of much more.
