village artwork

Folgarosa visits the Portuguese Popular Art Museum

The community of the village of Folgarosa was inspired by the intricate patterns and large size of the island carpet presented by the Museu de Arte Popular de Pombal and created a carpet in urban art, or rather rural art!

The work is the result of a collective creation made by the community of Folgarosa, Torres Vedras. The size and complexity of patterns of the Carpet made with golden eats grass from Ilha inspired the group to create a project never done before in that community, an artistic intervention in one of its streets: a carpet painted on the asphalt! This way, several geometric patterns were created, which served as tools to shape this urban carpet that delights those who made it and those who pass by! As it turned out, this carpet has a secret within its patterns… a small, naughty intruder in the form of a different pattern, which has become associated the story that it will bring good luck to any traveller who finds it.

Folgarosa

Parish Councils of Maxial and Monte Redondo, Municipality of Torres Vedras

In 1307, on the land today considered as Folgarosa, there were already 16 farmers who produced 23 moios (equivalent to 60 bushels) of bread and 2 moios of wine, with which they paid tithes to the Parish of S. Miguel de Torres Vedras. Today, as Mrs Belmira Guilherme adds, ‘one no longer hears the screeching of the animals, nor the shouting of the mothers calling their kids, who amused themselves playing with buttons or spinning tops. But Folgarosa is and will always be the same: a village on the top of a mountain, full of good, friendly people, provided with the north wind and the freshness of the sea, which can be seen in the distance.

The artwork that visited the Village

The Portuguese Popular Art Museum goes to Folgarosa

Created by 278 volunteers under the guidance of the artisans of the Cestinhos da Ilha Cooperative, the Carpete em Bracejo da Ilha was the piece selected by the Museu de Arte Popular Portuguesa de Pombal to present to the community of Folgarosa.

Testimonials

We were left with a big backache, but it was a lovely experience! We painted the asphalt brown, put some cardboard squares and painted over them. (…) Besides being a carpet, there is another name… street art? I think that’s it! It embellished the road – the residents were dazzled, and the mayor had calendars made.

Belmira Guilherme, Community of Folgarosa, Municipality of Torres Vedras

There’s a little bit of me in there.

Maria de Jesus, Community of Folgarosa, Municipality of Torres Vedras

Museums belong to a big family… which is the community. (…) Museums have pieces that tell stories (…) they maintain the living memory of a group of people who built a community.

Ana Umbelino, Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Culture of the City Council of Torres Vedras

We learn and we like to learn. Also so we don’t stay at home all the time. There is more socialising between people. (…) It’s impressive. (…) That is a work of art for me. It must not have been easy to do that work (referring to the carpet presented by the paired museum).
