Raul da Bernarda Museum goes to Cabeças

The Museu Raul da Bernarda selected a warrior’s head as the centrepiece to present to the community of Cabeças, in Alvaiázere. The curiosity and creativity of the community flourished when they met the author of the piece, the artist Alberto Cidraes, who participated online on the opening day and made a musical interaction with the community using musical instruments made of clay and created by the artist.

Museu Raul da Bernarda chose to bring a “Cabeça Cruzada” (Crossed Head) to the village of Cabeças, in Alvaiázere. This iconic piece is by architect and ceramist Alberto Cidraes and consists of geometric shapes made of ceramic. The warrior’s head, protected by a helmet, is one of his recurring themes. In 1987, Simpósio Internacional de Cerâmica – Alcobaça 87 (International Ceramics Symposium) inspired an act full of symbolism and sharing, marked by the spirit of openness and the exchange of methods, techniques and work processes, which gave rise to the artwork “Cabeça Cruzada II”.

Raul da Bernarda Museum

Municipality of Alcobaça

Raul da Bernarda Museum is housed in the former shop of the most traditional ceramics factory in Alcobaça and highlights the historical contribution of the city to the development of ceramics in Portugal. The museum’s collection consists of historical and contemporary pieces in Portuguese ceramics, which document more than a century of the ceramic industry, including the artistic ware of Alcobaça. The museum also promotes signature ceramics, with artwork by national and international artists, such as Arnold Zimmerman, Angus Suttie and Alberto Cidraes. It is through its collection and programming that the museum stands out as an important space, where we can learn about the history and culture of the region.

The artwork that visited the Museum

Cabeças goes to the Museu Raul da Bernarda

The community of Cabeças gave shape to their imagination with their own hands. Using clay, participants learned how to create their own clay working tools and modelled small heads in a variety of shapes: cats, bearded men, smiling women, creatures with ears and horns, monsters and even a fish head! A real tribute to all the inhabitants, real and imaginary, of the village of Cabeças!

Testimonials

I had never seen such a beautiful exhibition like the one with these little heads, that veil, that lighting; everything was so beautiful. (…) I won’t forget you, what you have done, what you have brought. You made us see things and do things that I had never done, nor had ever touched. I’m ecstatic. Inside I’m a queen. I’m fortunate to have met you all.

The promotion of this type of project (…) leads to a close relationship between cultural heritage, the community and museums, which in turn leads to an improvement in the quality of life and well-being (…) of the seniors involved.

We feel more united (after the project). We meet and talk about it (the project). It brought us more together and we talked about these things. The Museum in the Village project team gave us clay (…). I think we were there working the clay until 11 o’clock, midnight, there on the kitchen table seeing what the vision was going to do. (…) We were talking when we passed by Delfina (one of the project participants) and we commented ‘Look, last night I had until almost midnight there modelling in clay. If I don’t like it, I’ll take it apart again, do it again

– Ah, really? (Museum in the Village project team).

Yes. And then we would bring the clay back the next time we came here.
