The Village goes to the Museum
What does the village have to tell us about its own Cultural Heritage? Are there museums in villages or are there villages in museums?
After receiving the museum object on display in their village, the works are returned to the museums and the communities are invited to create a new work of art based on what they consider most significant about their villages and themselves. This relationship goes beyond contemplation, encouraging the reflective and creative action of the elderly to value and identify objects, memories, knowledge and local stories.
This exhibition presents 13 collective artworks of unique richness created by the communities and which were subsequently presented in museums. Just as the villages received the artworks from the museums, the museums open their doors to the communities and their artistic creations. The elderly are welcomed with an artistic performance that represents both the community and the museum, during which they enjoy the unveiling of their own work and re-encounter the piece that was once in their villages. This moment does not merely present the museum spaces to the communities, but rather symbolises the mark that the village leaves on the museum, just as the museum itself did in the first instance.
